Why is one AirPod quieter than the other? How to test and fix it
Left and right balance test

One AirPod quieter than the other comes down to two things Apple tells you to check first: debris on that AirPod’s speaker and microphone mesh, and the Balance slider in Settings → Accessibility → Audio & Visual, which should sit in the middle. If cleaning and centering don’t even out the sound, reset the AirPods, then get service.
The test above plays a 440 Hz tone in the left channel, the right channel and both, 2.5 seconds each, then a 60 Hz bass note and a sweep from 20 Hz to 20 kHz. Why is one AirPod quieter than the other?
One AirPod gets quieter than the other for reasons that fall into two groups: a setting that shifts sound to one side, or something on or inside the quieter earbud. Settings take a minute to rule out, so start there. The table lists each cause Apple’s pages point to, how to spot it and what to do.

Check the left and right balance
Checking the left and right balance takes two moves: hear the difference with a tone in each ear, then make sure the Balance slider in Accessibility settings sits in the middle. Apple lists that slider in its steps for when one AirPod is louder or quieter than the other, and its iPhone guide describes it as the left-right stereo balance.

Set the volume low
Wear both AirPods, connect them and turn the volume down. Apple warns that headphone audio too loud for too long can damage hearing.

Press Start above and compare the left tone with the right. Each plays for 2.5 seconds.

Go to Settings, tap Accessibility, tap Audio & Visual, then scroll down to Balance.

Switch to Custom tone, choose Left or Right and play a steady tone through one AirPod at a time.
If the left and right tones both come out of both AirPods, Mono Audio is on. Apple’s AirPods guide describes it as playing the same content in both ears instead of stereo, and it sits on the same Audio & Visual screen. Mono Audio evens out stereo content, not a weak speaker, and while it’s on you can’t use Spatial Audio and head tracking.
AirPods Pro 2 and AirPods Pro 3 with the Hearing Aid feature set up have a second Balance slider. Apple’s page on the Hearing Aid feature, published September 14, 2026, places it under Settings → your AirPods → Hearing Health → Hearing Assistance → Adjustments. Hearing Aid amplifies sounds around you only in Transparency mode, so this slider matters when those sounds seem louder on one side.
The same left and right tones work for other earbuds and laptops on the channel test for any headphones, which adds a stereo check.
Clean the quieter AirPod
Cleaning the quieter AirPod follows Apple’s mesh routine: remove AirPods Pro ear tips, brush only the meshes Apple marks with micellar water, rinse with distilled water and let the AirPod dry for at least two hours. Apple’s first step for an uneven pair is looking at the microphone and speaker mesh on each AirPod, so clean only if you see debris.

The routine itself is short. Brush each mesh in circles for about 15 seconds with a soft children’s toothbrush saturated in micellar water, blot the AirPod mesh-down on a paper towel, and do three rounds. Then repeat with distilled water and dry. The full sequence, with the supplies Apple names, is in the cleaning steps for muffled AirPods.
Apple says not to run AirPods under water and not to use sharp objects or abrasive materials. A tone from the test won’t clean a mesh either: it can show that one side is weaker, not lift debris out. If the quieter AirPod got wet rather than dirty, Apple’s drying steps for AirPods that got wet come first.
Reset or replace one AirPod
Resetting the AirPods comes next when one AirPod still misbehaves after the balance and cleaning checks; Apple says a reset can fix issues other than charging. For a silent AirPod, Apple first has you charge both in the case for 30 seconds, check that each is charging and test the problem AirPod alone. If that fails, reset.

The gestures come from Apple’s page on how to reset AirPods, published September 14, 2026. If the light doesn’t flash white, Apple says to close the AirPods in the case for 20 seconds, open the lid and repeat the gesture.
If one AirPod is still quieter after a reset, Apple’s cleaning pages say to get service, where a damaged AirPod can be replaced. Apple’s AirPods service page says its Limited Warranty covers manufacturing issues for one year but not accidental damage, while AppleCare covers unlimited repairs for drops and spills. If the warranty, AppleCare+ and consumer law don’t cover the problem, Apple says you may be able to replace AirPods for an out-of-warranty fee.
A replacement AirPod needs its own setup. Apple’s page on setting up a replacement AirPod, published March 30, 2026, starts with both AirPods in the case, the case on power and the lid closed for 20 minutes. If the light doesn’t flash white when you open it, reset with your model’s gesture and close the lid. Forget the AirPods in Bluetooth settings if they’re listed, then open the lid, go to the Home Screen and tap Connect.
