Test your iPhone speaker
Press Start and listen to each end of the phone: left, right, both, a bass note and a sweep. Muffled after a splash? Switch to Water.
Hold the phone sideways at arm’s length and listen to each end.
Using headphones? Turn the volume down before you start.
Test finished. Left and right tones from different ends mean both speakers work. A buzz or rattle during the sweep points to debris, water or damage.
Done. Play a song or a voice note to check the sound. If it is still muffled, run it once or twice more with the speaker facing down, then leave the phone to dry in open air.

When an iPhone speaker stops working, rule out the causes Apple lists before assuming damage: Silent mode, Do Not Disturb, a case or screen film, and a blocked or dirty opening. Then drag the Ringtone and Alerts slider in Settings. If that slider makes no sound, Apple says the speaker might need service.

How to fix the speaker on your iPhone
Fixing a silent or distorted iPhone speaker starts with a short sequence of checks that moves from settings to hardware, so the cheapest causes are ruled out first. The steps below come from Apple’s page on speaker sound problems, updated in March 2026, and take a few minutes.
Step 1
Turn off Silent mode
Move the Ring/Silent switch toward the display so no orange shows. On an iPhone with an Action button, open Control Center and make sure Silent mode is off.
Step 2
Turn off Do Not Disturb
Open Settings, tap Focus, then Do Not Disturb, and make sure it is off.
Step 3
Remove the case and films
Apple asks you to take off all screen protectors, films and cases before you test again.
Step 4
Look at both openings
Check whether the speaker opening is blocked or dirty. On iPhone, check the receiver too.
Step 5
Brush, don't poke
If an opening is dirty, clean it with a small, soft-bristled brush that is clean and dry.
Step 6
Drag the Ringtone and Alerts slider
In Settings, tap Sounds & Haptics (or Sounds) and drag the slider back and forth a few times. Silence or a dimmed speaker button means the speaker might need service.
Step 7
Make a speakerphone call
If the slider plays sound, call someone with speakerphone on. Static or crackling on the call points to network or reception: try later or from another place.

Music playing is not proof that Silent mode is off. Apple’s guide to Silent mode says clock alarms, audio apps such as Music and many games still play through the built-in speaker when Silent mode is on, while ringtones and alerts don’t. Check whether one speaker or both are working
The left and right tones in the test above are the quickest way to hear whether both ends of your iPhone produce sound. Hold the phone sideways at arm’s length, press Start and listen. If the left and right tones come from different ends of the phone, both speakers are working.
If every tone comes from the same end, the test alone does not prove the other end is broken. Check that end’s opening for dirt or water, then repeat Apple’s slider test. During the sweep, listen for a rattle or buzz at one pitch; if you hear one, look at the openings again before anything else.
To check headphones, a laptop or another phone, use the stereo and sweep speaker test, which adds a custom tone.
iPhone speaker muffled after water
Water in the speaker port can make an iPhone sound muffled until it evaporates, Apple says. To check, place the iPhone speaker side down on a lint-free cloth and see whether water drips out. Then dry it: tap the phone gently against your hand with the connector facing down, and leave it in a dry area with some airflow.
Apple’s water resistance page for iPhone 7 and later, updated in July 2026, rates iPhone 12 and later at IP68, to a depth of 6 meters for up to 30 minutes. The same page says resistance is not permanent and might decrease with normal wear, and it tells you not to dry an iPhone with external heat or push a foreign object into the Lightning or USB-C connector.
The Water mode in the tool above plays 165 Hz — steady, pulsing, then steady again — to move droplets sitting in the grille. The same 165 Hz tone also runs on the water eject tone page. If the phone went under or the port shows a liquid alert too, follow the drying routine for wet phones before charging.
iPhone speaker crackling or blocked by dirt
Crackling or a dull sound from an iPhone speaker that has not been near water calls for Apple’s hardware check: see whether the speaker opening is blocked or dirty. Remove any case, film or screen protector first, since Apple asks for all of them to come off before testing.
Clean the opening only with a small, soft-bristled brush that is clean and dry. For dust on the rest of the phone, Apple suggests a soft, lint-free cloth and says not to use cleaning products or compressed air.
If dust in the grille is loose, the dust mode of the speaker cleaner plays low sweeps and pulses through the speaker. It is not a substitute for the brush: sound cannot pull out lint pressed into the mesh. If the crackle happens only on calls, Apple points to the network rather than the speaker.
When calls are quiet only at your ear
If calls sound fine on speakerphone but quiet at your ear, the problem is likely the receiver — the small speaker you hold to your ear — rather than the main speaker. Apple’s advice for it is the same: make sure the receiver isn’t blocked or dirty, and clean it only with a small, soft, clean and dry brush.
