One AirPod not working? Find the silent side and fix it

Wear both AirPods, set the volume low and press Start. A tone plays in the left AirPod, then the right, then both, so you hear which side produces nothing.

One AirPod not working is, in Apple’s own troubleshooting, a charging and connection problem before it is a broken earbud. Its order is short: charge both AirPods in the case for 30 seconds, check that each one is charging, then test the silent AirPod alone with the other shut in the case. A reset comes after that, service last.

The test above tells you which side is actually silent before you change anything. The sections below follow Apple’s procedure step by step, then cover the three settings that make a healthy AirPod look dead, what differs for a left and a right earbud, and when a replacement is the answer.

Why is only one AirPod working?

Only one AirPod working comes from one of four places: that earbud never charged, it dropped off the Bluetooth connection, a setting is sending audio or the microphone somewhere you did not expect, or the earbud itself has failed. The order matters, because the first three cost a minute each and the last one costs money.

Apple keeps both halves of the problem on one page, If your left or right AirPod isn’t working, published September 14, 2026. A silent AirPod and an uneven pair get separate lists of steps there, and this page follows the silent one. If your AirPod plays but plays weakly, the checks for uneven left and right AirPods are the right set instead.

How to fix one AirPod with no sound

Fixing an AirPod with no sound follows Apple’s sequence exactly, and the step that does the diagnostic work is the isolation test in the middle. Most guides skip it. It is the one move that separates a dead earbud from a connection that simply routed audio to the wrong place.

  1. Step 1

    Charge the case first

Make sure the charging case is fully charged. Apple has separate steps for a case that will not charge at all.

  2. Step 2

    Clean the case charging port

Apple names this as its own step for both the AirPods case and the AirPods Pro case, before anything else is tried.

  3. Step 3

    Charge both for 30 seconds

Put both AirPods in the case and let them charge for 30 seconds, then open the case near your iPhone or iPad.

  4. Step 4

    Check each AirPod charges

Look at the charge status on the phone and confirm that both earbuds, not just one, are taking a charge.

  5. Step 5

    Isolate the silent AirPod

Put the AirPod that is not working in the matching ear, leave the other in the case and close the lid. Confirm the AirPods are connected, then play audio.

  6. Step 6

    Read the result

If it plays alone, charge both for 30 seconds again and retest the pair. If it stays silent, reset the AirPods.

The isolation test works because closing the lid on the other earbud removes every other explanation at once. There is no second AirPod to take the audio, no stereo channel to hide a silent side, and no ear detection weighing up two earbuds. What is left is one earbud, one connection and one answer.

It plays alone

The earbud and its speaker are fine. The fault was in how the pair connected, which is why Apple sends you back to a 30-second charge and a retest rather than to a repair.

It stays silent

The problem travels with that earbud. A reset is next, because Apple says a reset can fix issues beyond charging, and only after that does service make sense.

It plays, then cuts out

Intermittent sound on one side is a connection symptom, not a speaker one. Reset the pair, and check that the case contacts for that side are clean.

Apple’s own step for a case that never charges is a separate page, If your AirPods case isn’t charging. Work through that first if the case itself shows no sign of life, because every step above assumes a charged case.

Three settings that make a working AirPod look dead

Three settings can silence a perfectly good AirPod, and none of them appears in a charging check. All three live in the same place: Settings, then the name of your AirPods at the top of the screen.

The Microphone setting is the one that catches people on calls. Apple’s AirPods guide lets you choose Automatically Switch AirPods, Always Left AirPod or Always Right AirPod under Microphone, inside Audio & Routing. Pinned to one side, Apple says, that AirPod becomes the microphone even if you remove it from your ear or put it in the case. A right AirPod sitting in a closed case can therefore still be the microphone your callers hear, which sounds to them exactly like a dead or muffled earbud while your music plays normally in both.

SettingWhere it livesWhat it looks like when it bites
Microphone: Always Left or Always RightSettings → your AirPods → Audio & Routing → MicrophoneMusic fine in both, callers hear almost nothing or a distant voice
Automatic Ear DetectionSettings → your AirPods → Audio & RoutingOne AirPod plays only while the other is also in an ear
Noise Cancellation with One AirPodSettings → Accessibility → AirPodsNoise cancelling behaves differently with a single earbud in

Automatic Ear Detection is the reason behind one of the oddest versions of this complaint, an AirPod that works only when its twin is in. Apple describes the feature as AirPods stopping audio when you take them off and resuming when you put them back on, and it can be turned off on the same Audio & Routing screen. With it off, audio plays regardless of what the earbuds think they are sitting in.

The third one is narrower. Apple puts Noise Cancellation with One AirPod under Settings → Accessibility → AirPods, for AirPods 4 with Active Noise Cancellation, AirPods 5 and AirPods Pro. It changes how noise cancelling behaves when you wear a single earbud, so it affects how a lone AirPod sounds rather than whether it plays at all.

If callers are the only ones with a problem, the microphone side of this has its own page: the causes behind callers hearing you muffled start with that same Microphone setting.

Left AirPod not working, right AirPod not working

A left AirPod not working and a right AirPod not working are the same procedure. Apple writes one list of steps and never branches on the side, which is why its page is titled for the left or right AirPod. The side changes only which earbud you put in your ear for the isolation test and which contacts you clean.

CheckDepends on the side?What changes
Charging the case and both earbudsNoBoth charge together, in the same case
Isolation testYesThe silent AirPod goes in its matching ear, the other in the closed case
Case contactsYesClean the well that holds the silent earbud
Microphone settingYesAlways Left and Always Right pin opposite sides
ResetNoA reset covers both AirPods at once and cannot favour a side
ReplacementYesA single AirPod can be replaced on its own, with its own setup steps

The practical consequence is that “left” and “right” in a search query describe which earbud you are holding, not a different fault. The same holds for earbuds from other brands, where only the reset gesture changes. Where it does matter is the case: each earbud charges through its own contacts in its own well, so one flat AirPod beside one full AirPod usually means one dirty well, not a failing battery pair.

The same logic applies to a laptop or a phone speaker, where a silent channel is easier to prove with tones than with music. The channel test on a laptop plays left, right and both for any output, not only AirPods.

One AirPod not working but charged

An AirPod that shows a full charge and still plays nothing has already cleared the first half of Apple’s procedure, so the remaining causes are the connection, a setting or the earbud. Run the isolation test, then read it against the three settings above before assuming hardware.

Water is the exception worth ruling out early, because it produces a silent or very faint earbud that still charges normally. Apple’s instruction after AirPods get wet is to wipe them dry and wait at least two hours before using them again, and a test run before that window closes proves nothing. The drying routine for an AirPod that went through water covers the ratings by model and what Apple rules out.

Debris is the other cause that survives a charging check. It rarely silences an AirPod outright — it makes one side faint and dull — so if the silent side is in fact a very quiet side, the mesh routine on AirPods that sound dull applies, with its two-hour dry before any comparison.

Reset, replace or get service

A reset is Apple’s step once the isolation test leaves the fault with one earbud. Hold the setup button on the back of the case until the status light flashes amber and then white, then pair the AirPods with your device again. Apple says plainly that resetting your AirPods can fix issues other than charging, which is why it sits ahead of any repair decision.

If the AirPod is still silent after a reset, a single earbud can be replaced on its own rather than the pair. Apple has separate instructions for that case, set up your replacement AirPod, because a replacement earbud has to be joined to the pair you already own instead of being paired as a new set.

Before you book anything, run the test at the top of this page one last time with the volume low. A tone in the left channel, then the right, then both, is the clearest evidence of which side produces nothing, and it is worth having that answer ready rather than a description of a song that sounded wrong.

Common questions

Why is only one AirPod working?
Only one AirPod working usually means the other did not charge, lost its Bluetooth connection, or has debris on its speaker mesh. Apple's order is to charge both in the case for 30 seconds, confirm each one shows a charge, then test the silent AirPod on its own with the other in the closed case.
Why is my left AirPod not working but it's charged?
A charged AirPod that stays silent points at the connection or a setting rather than the battery. Test it alone with the other AirPod in the closed case. If it plays on its own, the pair needs recharging together and a retest; if it stays silent, Apple's next step is a reset.
Can only one AirPod be dead?
One AirPod can run out of charge on its own, because each earbud holds its own battery and charges through its own contacts in the case. A single dirty or damaged contact leaves that side flat while the other reads full. Apple's first step is cleaning the charging port of the case.
Why does my left AirPod only work when the right one is in?
An AirPod that plays only while its twin is worn is usually Automatic Ear Detection deciding the audio has nowhere to go. Apple lets you turn it off under Settings, the name of your AirPods, then Audio & Routing. With it off, audio keeps playing whether or not the AirPods detect an ear.
How do I fix an unresponsive AirPod?
An unresponsive AirPod gets a reset: hold the setup button on the case until the status light flashes amber, then white, and pair the AirPods again. Apple says a reset can fix issues other than charging. If the AirPod stays silent after that, Apple's instruction is service or a replacement earbud.
